PURDUE EXTENSION RE-7-W Fueling and Feeding America Through Renewable Resources RenewableEnergy Synergies Between Cover Crops and Corn Stover Removal

چکیده
Introduction In 2007 the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) established that by 2022, 36 billion gallons of biofuel are to come from renewable fuel sources. More specifically, the mandate requires the production of cellulosic biofuels to increase to 16 billion gallons ethanol equivalent annually by 2022 (Energy Independence and Security Act, 2007). Cellulosic biofuels are derived from several sources, including corn residue (Zea mays L.), or corn stover.

Fueling America Through Renewable Resources
Introduction Biomass energy has received much attention in recent years. We now use about one third of the U.S. corn crop for biofuels. More recently, attention has focused on cellulosic resources—dedicated energy crops like switchgrass, miscanthus, and corn stover. Now the question has been raised concerning the economics of collecting just the corn cobs for energy instead of the stover. This ...
متن کاملComparison of corn and switchgrass on marginal soils for bioenergy
Crop residues such as corn (Zea mays L.) stover are viewed as an abundant and inexpensive source of biomass that can be removed from fields to produce bioenergy. Assumptions include that with minimum or no-tillage farming methods, there will be no deleterious production or environmental effects. A long-term field study was established in eastern Nebraska, USA, to compare the switchgrass managed...

Cover crop root contributions to soil carbon in a no-till corn bioenergy cropping system
Crop residues are potential biofuel feedstocks, but residue removal may reduce soil carbon (C). The inclusion of a cover crop in a corn bioenergy system could provide additional biomass, mitigating the negative effects of residue removal by adding to stable soil C pools. In a no-till continuous corn bioenergy system in the northern US Corn Belt, we used CO2 pulse labeling to trace plant C from ...
متن کاملEthanol Production from Maize
The production of fuel ethanol from corn grain is widely carried out in the US, with total current production at 7 billion gallons. This may soon reach 10 billion gallons or more. This chapter addresses the potential of fuel ethanol as an additional source of product based on utilization of the cellulosic (non-food) portions of maize, and in particular the pericarp, cobs, stalks and leaves of t...
